Lil Wayne is a fan of himself.
In an interview for the “Bumbu Room,” the Young Money boss revealed that when it comes to hip-hop, he only listens to one person—himself.
“I listen to music that’s not hip-hop all the time because I don’t listen to no other hip-hop but my damn self. And I only listen to myself,” said Weezy.
He shared some of the diverse artists that make up his playlist including Anita Baker, Keith Sweat, Marvin Gaye, Bob Marley, Judas Priest, Nirvana, and blink-182. Only one rapper, Tech N9ne, was mentioned. “It’s impossible for me not to love every type of music,” he added.
He also acknowledged the “new hip-hop,” but noted that it’s different from the music he grew up with. “The new hip-hop, I love it. I love that it’s actually changed,” he said. “Back in the G, you had to spit your heart out. Now it’s changed. Let’s just make something that it’s cool to hear, we don’t have to listen to it—listening is different than hearing. So when we hear it, we like it, it’s all good, so that makes it easier for me.”
During the interview, Wayne also revealed that he doesn’t know the words to his music until it’s time to rehearse for a show. “Until [manager] Cortez put it on a set list, meaning for my show, that’s when I have to listen to the song ’cause I have no idea what the words are.”
