AUDIO & VIDEO: Tyga – Lightskin Lil Wayne

ALBUM: Tyga – Legendary

From his “Legendary” album, Tyga pays homage to his mentor and former boss Lil Wayne by replicating some of Weezy’s most famous visuals in his video for “Lightskin Lil Wayne.”

For his tribute, Tyga weaves through Wayne’s lengthy tenure by mimicking the videos that describe these time periods. First, Tyga embodies Tha Carter III which is arguably Lil Wayne’s prime. He does this putting his spin on Wayne’s iconic “A Milli” video. “A Milli” continues to be the basis of the video as he cuts to other legendary Wayne visuals.

Similar to the way “A Milli” severed as the introduction to Lil Wayne’s “Got Money” video, Tyga uses “Lightskin Lil Wayne” to set the stage for the visual to his single, “Too Many.” For “Too Many,” Tyga uses Tha Carter II’s “Fireman” video as the main muse. Like Wayne, Tyga climbs on to a fire engine to rap the song’s lyrics in a dimly lit lot. His wardrobe also mirrors Wayne’s A Bathing Ape-centric vibe that has become a calling card of that era. While there is a stark difference between Tha Carter II and III, Tyga’s team does an excellent job at seamlessly blending these periods. For example: “A Milli” still serves as “Too Many’s” base even as the visual pushes “Fireman” to the forefront. This is done by having Tyga rap next to a Rolls Royce. In the full version of “A Milli,” the video starts with footage of Birdman gifting Wayne a Rolls Royce after it was announced that Tha Carter III had gone platinum in a week.
